New Nokia N96 vs Nokia N95 8GB

New Nokia N96 vs Nokia N95 8GB

N96 now available to pre-order. Stock due 1st October.

The Nokia N96 has the same dual slide design as the N95. It’s a very similar phone with the same 5 megapixel camera, 2.8 inch screen, HSDPA, Wi-Fi and excellent multimedia functions. It has 3G, HSPDA and GPS with Nokia Maps and Geo-tagging. It has the Nokia web browser with Mini Map and an RSS reader. The N96 is slightly longer and wider than the N95 8GB but is 3mm thinner, so pretty much the same size.

The name suggests that the N96 might be a successor to the N95 8GB, but in reality it’s more of an alternative specification. The Nokia N96 has 16GB internal memory which can be expanded to a huge 24GB using an 8GB memory card. This is the N96’s main advantage over the N95 8GB and the biggest reason why people might choose the N96. Other minor improvements include a newer version of the Symbian S60 OS, v9.3 as opposed to v9.2 and the addition of RDS to the built-in FM radio. The N96 also has a DVB-H TV receiver but this is of no use in the UK as we don’t have any DVB-H TV broadcasts.

On the downside, the N96 battery offers only 3 hours 40 minutes talk time between charges, whereas the N95 8GB has 6 hours talk time. The dual ARM processor on the N96 is not as powerful as the N95 8GB and it lacks a 3D graphics accelerator, although most users won’t notice any difference. The N96 also loses a few insignificant features such as infrared, nothing worth losing sleep over.

So which is the best phone? The N96 has that huge memory, which is definitely an advantage in a multimedia phone. In terms of design the N96 is more modern, it looks similar to other new Nseries phones. But the N95 8GB looks meaner and more exclusive, in fact it probably looks the more expensive of the two. Which leads me on to the price, you’ll pay around £200 more for the new Nokia N96. Compare deals on both phones and decide for yourself.

The MDA Compact IV is the T-Mobile branded version of the HTC Touch Diamond. The T-Mobile version has nicely rounded edges and it weighs less - only 98g compared to the 110g. Apart from a few minor cosmetic changes the Compact IV is near identical to the Touch Diamond.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact IV is a slim touchscreen phone powered by the highly customisable Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system. It has a clever TouchFLO 3D system, in T-Mobile’s white and magenta colour scheme, that allows your photos and music to be searched as you rotate the phone, or via finger gestures on it’s impressive screen.

HTC Touch Pro available as SIM Free - contract deals to follow

HTC Touch Pro available as SIM Free - contract deals to follow

HTC Touch ProThe HTC Touch Pro can now be pre-ordered in the UK as a SIM free handset.

The HTC Touch Pro is the big daddy to the HTC Touch Diamond and has been eagerly anticipated by the Windows Mobile smartphone community as it has everything the HTC Touch Diamond does as well as a full slide out Qwerty keyboard, larger battery and a memory card slot. The slide out QWERTY keyboard has 5 rows of keys to make light work of typing-intensive tasks like composing email or working on Microsoft Office® documents - perfect for when your day takes a serious turn.

The HTC Touch Pro was codename the HTC Raphael during development and will be known as the MDA Vario IV on the T Mobile network with other networks yet to confirm their names.

The HTC Touch Pro has a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen providing four times the resolution of most smart devices, making email, documents and web pages sharper and easier to work with than ever before.

HTC’s rich, touch-responsive interface, TouchFLO 3D, provides a stunningly intuitive way to zip through common tasks like messaging, calendar checks or making calls. Delve a little deeper to find that playing media files, searching for contacts and surfing the web are also responsive to your touch.

The web browser puts the full Internet in the palm of your hand. Websites look just like they do on a PC, and TouchFLO 3D makes it easy to pan around and zoom in on exactly the information you’re looking for. If you need a wide screen, simply tilt the Touch Pro sideways and the page switches to landscape view.

High speed connectivity will keep you in touch with colleagues and contacts wherever you are. Integrated GPS can be used with maps software for a full turn-by-turn satellite navigation experience.

Built-in Wi-Fi and TV-out functionality mean you can hook up to the local wireless hot spot to surf, then deliver the perfect PowerPoint® presentation without a laptop in sight.

The HTC Touch Pro isn’t as pocketable as the HTC Touch diamond due to it’s Qwerty keyboard but it’s dimensions (w x h x d): 51 x 102 x 18.05 millimetres , 2 x 4 x 0.7 inches and weight of 165 grams (battery included) still makes this handset the best all round Windows mobile device out currently, in our opinion.

The only other challenger could be the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 which is due to hit the UK sometime in September / October according to the latest reports…
